This is where we can make the distinction between additive and subtractive retouching. Extending the background is additive, because we are generating something that wasn't there before – as in the above image. Removing the mic stands, however, is subtractive because we are eliminating it to reveal what already existed behind it. In the below example, more room was needed to the right, in the direction where the athlete is running. Background extensions are a common request not only because of aesthetic preferences, but also for the practical purpose of space for eventual typography that may be added on top of the final image.
